“A Long Walk to Water” is a novel by Linda Sue Park, based on a true story, that tells the story of two young individuals living in Sudan, Salva and Nya, who are trying to survive during the Second Sudanese Civil War.
Salva, an 11-year-old boy, is separated from his family and forced to flee his village when rebels attack it.
He spends years walking across the desert with other refugees before being taken to a refugee camp in Ethiopia, and later on to another one in Kenya.
Meanwhile, Nya, a young girl from a different tribe, spends hours every day walking to fetch water for her family from a distant pond.
The book alternates between Salva’s and Nya’s perspectives and shows how their paths eventually cross, leading to a brighter future for both of them.
